Backpacking Clues

Backpacking is a fun and challenging activity that tests your camping skills and endurance. When properly equipped and prepared it is great time. Being well prepared is the key. So let's talk about how to do that.

Internal Frame Packs

Advantages of : Internal frame packs fit closer to the back, which keeps the load lower and closer to your back. This makes the pack more stable on your back. The more stable load works better if you are climbing hills or going off trails.

Fitting your pack:

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a pack is to make sure it fits correctly. It is best to try the pack on and adjust all the straps to assure it fits correctly. A sternum strap to keep the shoulder straps in place is an important feature. External pockets are good to keep items that may be needed at any time readily available. Seams should be double stitched and good quality zippers installed. Look for name brands and read reviews if possible.

External Frame Packs

Advantages: External frame packs are capable of carrying a larger load. The weight is carried more on the hips than the shoulders. It also doesn't fit as close to the back and allows air to circulate better, which keeps you cooler in our hot environment. The extra load capacity gives you the chance to carry more water which is also very important.

Disadvantages: Internal frame packs generally can't carry as large a load as external frames. The weight is distributed more evenly between the hips and the shoulders and can be more fatiguing to carry.

Pack it Up:

The diagram above gives a general idea of how to distribute the weight in each type of pack. It is important to pack your gear so that it is balanced and doesn't shift around on your back as you hike.

Disadvantages: External Frame packs are loaded wit the heaver weight at the top and tend to be more unstable when on your back. Also younger scouts have trouble finding packs that have a hip belt that is short enough to fit around the hips. Since he load is carried on the hips this can become a real problem.
