Canoeing or Kayaking

| Well you are about to venture forth on the water. In general packing for this type of trip is pretty much the same as for a backpacking trip except there is no backpack. Special care should be taken to make sure everything stays dry. There isn't anything much worse than getting to camp and finding a wet sleeping bag or no dry clothes. Also food. camp stoves, must be kept dry. Don't forget matches!! Not having a way to light your stove isn't good. |
Pack all gear in zip locks bags. If possible use a water tight bag to pack you stuff in. Float bags or a water proof boat bag are best. If you don't have a water proof bag use heavy duty trash bags INSIDE a duffle bag or sports bag. Packing this way will prevent the trash bags from being torn during handling and loading and unloading the canoes. The other important thing to consider is rope to tie all your stuff in the canoe. It doesn't matter if everything is water proof if your canoe turns over and it all sinks. Keep it tied to your canoe, If kayaking keep in mind that you store your stuff inside the boat. Access is usually through hatches in the boats deck which cannot handle very large bags, so care must be taken to keep your gear bags smaller, which means you may need more. |
