Troop 237: A Brief History

Troop 237 was chartered in late 1986 to Merrill United Methodist at the behest of "Whitey" Merrill, the namesake of the Church. The troop was chartered with a membership of 10 Scouts and four adult leaders in Light house District of South Florida Council. During it's existence the troop has strived to maintain a high quality and active program, very focused on it's outdoor activities. The Troop prides itself in an active monthly camping program.

The first Scoutmaster was Mr. Joe xxxx, who served as the Troop leader for about 12 months, until a job transfer forced him to give up the position and move out of state.

With the departure of Troop 237's first Scoutmaster, the rains of leadership were taken up by Joe Pratt. Joe served as Scoutmaster until May 1989. During his tenure the Troop continued to build it's outdoor program and establish itself as one of the best in Lighthouse District. During this time period the troop attended it's first out of state summer camp at Daniel Boone, and also attended a second camp at Tana Keeta in Gulf Stream Council. In 1989 Joe served as Camporee Chief for the Spring Camporee. The theme was wilderness survival and included many Scout skills related to surviving in the wilderness

In May 1989 Steve Corry took over as Scoutmaster and continues to serve to present day. Since 1989 the troop and it's leadership have continued to maintain an active and energetic outdoor program that includes backpacking, canoeing trips, camporees and a shooting sports program. The summer camp program is a mainstay, and each summer the troop travels out of state to camps in North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee for a week in the mountains, where activities allow scouts to earn numerous merit badges, work on rank advancements and have a chance to go white water rafting.

In 1995 South Florida Council instituted a change in the geographical boundaries of the Districts created an new District of Miccosokee and Troop 237 became part of New River District. During the next several years 237 participated in many District activities and found a new home. Again in 2000 Council again re-drew District lines back to there original borders and renamed the District Pine Island

During the last twenty years fourteen 237 Scouts have attained the rank of Eagle, the first reaching this rank in 1994. Many of it's adult leaders have been active in district and council events, serving on many training staffs, and attending Wood Badge, with a total of eight 237 Scouters having received their beads. In the fall of 2004 Ken Dooley, the then troop treasure, served and Chief of the Fall Encampment for Pine Island District. The theme being of the event was"The Pirates of Pine Island" and included participation of re-enactor who played the part of pirates that included and mock raid at the evening campfire.

One of the activities that 237 has been involved in is Webelos Winter Weekend held at Camp Tana Keeta in Gulf Stream Council and sponsored by Troop 836. WWW is in it's 22nd year and the troop has staffed this event for about 18 of those, demonstrating camp cooking and team building activities.

In September 2006 our character was transferred to All Saints Catholic Church in Sunrise, Fl. The move was prompted by a change in the demographics of the troop with membership coming from more western portions of the city. We look forward to long and fruitful relationship with our new sponsor and express our gratitude to Merrill United for it's long a faithful support,
